The "C.R.E.S.T." Initiative

Program Summary

The "Community Revitalization through Efforts that are Sustainable and Timely" (C.R.E.S.T) initiative is a comprehensive program designed to address the ongoing impact of Anti-Black racism while promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion. This initiative recognizes the barriers and limitations faced by Black communities in Canada, particularly in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA), and aims to empower African, Caribbean, and Black youth between the ages of 18 and 29 in pursuing careers in the STEAM fields (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics).

At its core, C.R.E.S.T is dedicated to creating job opportunities and cultivating the necessary skills for young individuals to thrive in future-oriented industries. It acknowledges that systemic racism is deeply rooted in various aspects of Canadian society and endeavors to dismantle these barriers.

Key features of the C.R.E.S.T Initiative include:

  1. Diverse Program Offerings: C.R.E.S.T offers a range of integrated services such as K-12 tutoring, Employment Assistance, and Mentorship, tailored to the unique cultural characteristics, lived experiences, and perspectives of African, Caribbean, and/or Black youth.
  2. Culturally-Responsive Framework: The initiative is built upon a culturally-responsive framework, ensuring that the programs and services are designed to resonate with the youth it serves.
  3. Equitable Participation: C.R.E.S.T seeks to ensure equitable participation for Black youth in the STEAM fields, not only enabling them to enter these professions but also helping them retain their positions, thereby positively impacting the Black Canadian community's future.
  4. Targeted Economic-Focused Programming: The initiative recognizes the need for targeted economic-focused programming to assist Black Ontarians in overcoming barriers and thriving in the future economy.

In summary, the C.R.E.S.T Initiative is a visionary and holistic approach to address Anti-Black racism, foster diversity and inclusion, and empower Black youth in Canada by providing them with the tools and opportunities needed to succeed in the STEAM fields and contribute to a more equitable society.
