We acknowledge that the Change-Makers Foundation operates in the City of Toronto, which is situated on the traditional territory of many nations, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples, and is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. We also acknowledge that Toronto is covered by Treaty 13 signed with the Mississaugas of the Credit, and the Williams Treaties, signed with multiple Mississaugas and Chippewa bands. We recognize and honour their longstanding stewardship of this land.
This acknowledgement serves as a reminder of the historical and ongoing impacts of colonization and the dispossession of Indigenous peoples from their territories. As we reflect on the past, we also acknowledge the tragic legacy of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, which brought untold suffering to millions of African people forcibly transported across the ocean and exploited in the Americas.
Toronto, like many other cities, has a complex history shaped by colonialism, including the displacement of Indigenous communities and the brutal enslavement of African people. We must strive to understand and reckon with this history to build a more just and equitable society for all.
Today, we recognize the enduring presence and contributions of Indigenous communities in this region. We stand in solidarity with them and commit to supporting their right to self-determination, land, and resources.
Let this acknowledgment be a call to action for all residents of Toronto to engage in meaningful reconciliation efforts, fostering understanding, respect, and collaboration with the Indigenous peoples and all communities that call this land home. May we work together toward a future that is founded on reconciliation, justice, and inclusivity.
